The brief Boohbah cameo at 1:57 made me laugh way too hard. No clue why, beyond the fact that I just wasn't expecting it. Also, just for the hell of it, I decided to see how much Clarkson's tape is available for on eBay... 17 years later, it's been discounted even further. Now you can have it for a mere £1.99 - what a deal!

0:18 Despite figures like this, wannabe car guys keep believing torque = acceleration. I don't know how many years I've kept telling them. The diesel in this example has 59% more torque and isn't even a split second quicker 0-100. (And it certainly won't do 151 mph; mark an ex-owners words here)

I write this here in the U.S. in April 2021 so I don't know who else is here watching, but now here in the U.S. we have full size pickup trucka than can get up to 30 miles per gallon with a small (for the application) diesel engine and midsize pickups that get 30+ mpg. I'm guessing that's about 7.6 liters per 100 Kilometers? I don't know proper measurements, on the weird shit the U.S. uses Also, here in the U.S. we focus more on emissions rather than miles per gallon, so with all the emissions equipment diesel engines get, I suppose it can be argued that tailpipe emissions in our diesel engines come up cleaner than gasoline counterparts, especially if factored in for the size of the vehicle and power produced.
9ramthebuffs9 2 місяці tagasi
yes but how long do the def motors last and how much does it cost to maintain them? this all relates to total energy consumed. a 12 valve will literally run forever and get 22mpg. a 4bt is the same and you can get 30 in a half ton.

02:00 "Who is going to be going around the M25 and decide 'I need some trousers'". Me, actually. I was driving along eating a McDonalds (a Mc DLT. Remember them ?), and the mayonnaise spilled all over the crutch of my black trousers. I tried cleaning it off, but it made things worse. You can imagine what the stain looked like, and I was on my way to Crawley to give a presentation. The only trousers they had were far too big, and were beige. I looked and felt like a complete twerp, but I can tell you they were a life-saver. (And I've no idea what they made the mayo out of, but I never got the stain out)

4.29 on 119 miles, diesels are a joke.
Galaxy A11
Galaxy A11 4 місяці tagasi
@itsgary first: you are ridiculous, you are the one still using/defending something that nobody wants, not even europeans want diesel anymore, it sucks balls. For every 300000 miles turbo you find there are 1000 dead turbos at 100000 miles check your data first, 370000 miles? Highway miles at a constant speed? You'll get 600000 no problem. How can a machine with more components be more reliable than one with less? If we were having the same argument on manual vs automatic you being a european would be saying that manuals are better, which they are. You are judging reliability based on 2 cars? 2? Let's say 200000 and then we talk, remember that diesel only took off, (bacause now has crashed and burned) in europe, the rest of the world not really, and don't say africa, bacause they use old and reliable diesel engines. And finally I get it, it's your choice and we hate having our choices criticized, don't we? DIESEL SUCKS ASS. Clarkson not knowing made the point, drive 120 miles so you can sace £4 on a car that is more expensive on pretty much every regard. You must be made of money with those choices. Goodbye.
itsgary 4 місяці tagasi
@Galaxy A11 You're being ridiculous. A few years of use out of a turbo? Our car, 14 years old, 220,000 miles on the original turbo. A family members previous car, 18 years old, 370,000 miles, also the original turbo. Neighbours car, 8 years old, once again, the original turbo. All serviced every 12-15k. And besides, even if one did fail it wouldn't cost thousands as they can fairly readily be remanufactured.
Galaxy A11
Galaxy A11 4 місяці tagasi
@itsgary yeah!, now mechanics are to blame, machines have to adapt to YOU and the situation you are living in, you are the owner, not the other way around, ok. Now turbos are very very complicated, the working principles may be easy to undertand, but the application is hard, a dying turbo can kill an engine, not always, but it happens, and if you are "lucky" enough you would pay several thousands of dollars for a new turbo, correct me if I'm wrong but on car with a few years of use, that wouldn't make sense, oil is no joke when it comes to turbo engines, you have to be careful with time/miles and the oil quality, that situation is more forgiving on non turbo engines, it's nice to have some slack don't you think? have you heard about turbo timers? Check on that and why is important. DPF do die, a lot, for the most part because people don't know "how to use the car", check on "dpf regeneration cycles", that process alone destroys the whole purpose of the dpf, and at least for me, makes the dpf a "political tool", europe made a mistake by going the diesel way, I don't know if you are aware of VW's diesel scandal (not taking into consideraion conspiracy theories) Yes, I know that gasoline engines have grown in complexity over the last 15 years, but at least where I live you can still choose the same car with different engines, that would be gdi turbo and efi non turbo, not to mention that gdi turbo is not that common.
itsgary 4 місяці tagasi
@Galaxy A11 Turbos =/= expensive to maintain? They really aren't all that complicated. Petrol cars have turbos and fuel injection systems too. The difference is that a diesel doesn't need to precisely mix fuel/air, so they aren't as easily affected by deteriorated vacuum lines or broken sensors like a petrol car is. DPFs *do not* just spontanously die outside of warranty, and shouldn't die in general unless they are abused, neither do turbos. There's a reason why company cars throughout Europe have almost exclusively been diesels for the past two or three decades, they are much cheaper to run and much more bearable on long motorway drives. In countries that don't have mechanics that can work on them with easy access to parts, I can understand. But this was filmed in the UK, where parts and expertise are readily available.
Galaxy A11
Galaxy A11 4 місяці tagasi
@itsgary cheaper to maintain? Do you even own a diesel car? They are not, they all have turbos, complicated injection systems, injector pumps are way more complicated and expensive to replace, a bosch fuel pump for a ferrari costs like $100 when you buy it from a kia dealership, yeah! Fuck yeah! Is the same fuel pump, check the carwizard's channel to know more about that, EGR systems on diesel engines just set the engine on "death mode" from the factory, check powestrokehelp channel for that, DPF systems are an overcomplicated and stupid way to take care on the environment only to pass emissions tests, then when it dies soon after the warranty ends it's all yours to pay for that, check the whole of youtube to know more about dpf systems failure and how it works, most diesel engines still use timing belts which are expensive to replace, I could go on the whole day, maybe you are talking about and old vw, mercedes or toyota diesel engine, yes, those never die, but anything more modern than those it's just nothing but overcomplicated crap that we as consumers don't need.
